Why a resume is not the whole story

A resume is a chronology. It shows where you were allowed to be, not what you are capable of. If your path has been non-linear, self-taught, interrupted, or built in rooms that never gave you the title to match the work, a chronology will always undersell you.

We read between the lines instead. The years you ran the whole operation under someone else's job title. The systems you built because nobody else would. The things you taught yourself at midnight because you refused to stay stuck. That is the story we want, and it rarely fits in bullet points.

Who Is Doing the Hiring

17 years in HR leadership taught me exactly what to stop doing

I spent 17 years in HR lead roles watching brilliant people get filtered out by keyword scanners, credential checklists, and interview theatre. I follow the human rights legislation that governs hiring in Canada, to the letter. What I refuse to follow is the habit of mistaking a polished resume for proof of ability.

My specialty is finding the talent in the person everyone else overlooked and bringing it to the surface. I built these companies to challenge the status quo, and I hire the same way. Honesty and transparency will get you farther with me than embellishing ever will. Tell me what you don't know yet. I have hired people for the way they said exactly that.

AI skills are an asset here, not a requirement. I am an AI Architect who has been building in this space for three years, and I specialize in neurodivergent systems: AI and talent infrastructure built around how minds actually work. On-the-job learning comes with the seat. My expectations are clear: take initiative, communicate honestly, and raise problems early. You will receive context, feedback, and room to learn while being trusted to move the work forward.

I move fast. When you are the right person, I will not make you wait through seven rounds and a panel to hear it. And I am just as direct when something is not working: you will know where you stand, in plain words, early. High performance is the standard here, held fairly and within Canadian employment law, and the people who want that standard tend to thrive on it.

Volunteer with the magazine, co-op placements, and skills you cannot buy

Here is something I tell people all the time. Some of the most valuable skills I ever gained came from volunteer work. I raised my hand, took on work nobody was paying me for, and learned things no course was teaching. Those skills got me hired. More than once, the experience I gave away for free became the exact reason someone paid me.

Skills learned from an employer willing to take you on and teach you are one of the most precious commodities out there. Walking past that opportunity is a mistake you will feel for years.
